Romanian Citizenship

"X-PAT Advisory Services" offers legal advisory services to individuals interested in obtaining the Romanian citizenship and all the subsequent Romanian documents such as: birth certificates, identity cards and passports.

The following categories of individuals can apply for Romanian citizenship:

I. Former Romanian citizens whose citizenship had been lost out of their fault or had been taken away without their consent before December 22nd, 1989, as well as their descendants to the second grade, upon their request and by keeping the current citizenship they hold, if they fulfill all the following conditions:

a) Through their behavior, actions and attitude, they prove loyalty towards Romania and they do not act or support actions against the Romanian laws and national security and declare that they had never done it in the past.

b) They are at least 18 years old.

c) They are known as persons with a good behavior, they had not been convicted in the country or abroad for any offence that could make them not worth holding Romanian citizenship.

d) They prove that they have in Romania the legal opportunities for a decent living under the legal regime of staying for foreigners.

II. Individuals with or without a foreign citizenship if they fulfill all the following conditions:

a) They were either born, or have been living on the Romanian territory at the date of their request for at least 8 years; 5 years in case of a marriage with a Romanian citizen, and half of the terms if they are well known personalities abroad or had invested in Romania over 500.000 EUR.

b) They prove loyalty towards Romania through their behavior, actions and attitudes; they did not act or support actions against the state order or national security and declare that neither in the past they have done it.

c) They are 18 years old.

d) They can prove that in Romania they have enough opportunities for a decent living under the legal regime of staying for foreigners.

e) They are well known for a good behavior, they have not been convicted in their country or abroad for any offence that makes make them not worth holding Romanian citizenship.

f) They can speak Romanian and prove knowledge about the Romanian culture and civilization in order to be easily integrated in the local social life.

g) They know the provisions of the Romanian constitution.

The applications for being granted Romanian citizenship are submitted to a special commission which is part of the Minister of Justice. The process for obtaining the Romanian citizenship may take minimum one year from the time of submitting the full set of documents.
